A textbook example of the officially awarded Panzertruppenabzeichen der Legion Condor, made in Germany for award to the 415 Condor Legion tankers of the Drohne and then the Imka Verbдnden who received the badge in Spain from Oberst Ritter von Thoma between 1936 and 1939.

Introduced in autumn 1936, the Condor Legion Tank Badge recalled the 1921 Tank Badge made for and awarded to members of the German tank corps of WW1. Until Generaloberst von Brauchitsch's Order of July 10th 1939, making the badge official and establishing an approved design, the badge was semi-official and locally produced. Some sources say that the so-called 1st pattern badges were made in Lisbon, others that they were made in Madrid. As Madrid was in the hands of the government and not Franco's rebels when the badge was conceived, Lisbon seems more likely. 1st pattern badges are said to have been struck in bronze, copper and nickle-silver and then silver-plated. They were hollow-backed. One example was made in solid gold, from Spanish coins, for von Thoma by the officers under his command but it was probably cast from a stamped badge. At some point, one of the dies used to make the 1st pattern badge is said to have developed a crack.

The 1st pattern Panzertruppenabzeichen der Legion Condor is so rare as to be almost mythical. There are plenty of badges around pretending to be 1st pattern badges but perhaps one in a thousand seen in circulation might be genuine. The official 2nd pattern Panzertruppenabzeichen der Legion Condor as awarded to Condor Legion tankers back in Germany is also extremely rare but examples do appear on the market from time to time. Real ones are not cheap. The award document is also extremely rare. This badge has been faked for the past fifty years. Some fakes are very convincing, especially if you do not know what a real 1st or 2nd pattern badge looks like.
